It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Jim Gobert on 28 June.

Jim came to Essex as a visiting professor from the University of Tennessee in the mid-80s and returned as a full-time professor at the end of the 1980s.

He soon established himself as part of the leadership of the Department, including a period of acting as Dean of the School of Law.

Jim was highly dedicated to fostering student and staff exchange. He was instrumental in establishing the first of the highly successful double degree programmes with French universities and was in charge of the School's Erasmus exchange programme for many years, bringing many European students to Essex and Essex students to universities all over the EU.

Jim had an international reputation as a criminal lawyer, particularly for his groundbreaking work on corporate crime. Among his many publications are the monographs Rethinking Corporate Crime (co-authored with Maurice Punch) and Justice, Democracy and the Jury.

Jim was a dedicated teacher and a wonderful colleague, and most importantly a very kind person with a great sense of humour. He was also a highly successful Bridge player.

Jim retired in 2011 and moved to New York City. He passed away in Florida, with his wife Cindy by his side. His funeral will take place on Wednesday 2 July. He will be greatly missed.
